About
My research is basically an inspection of the interaction between entertainment and pedagogy in a Kenyan popular television programme called "Vioja Mahakamani." The strategies of the programme are discussed especially in view of the problem: where should the comical aspects stop so as to allow for the info/education on the law to flow? At what point does the comical aspect become muffled by a need to 'teach' the audience on the penal code?
The nature of the programme is also discussed: How does the programme retain an interested audience despite its repetitive nature? The paradox of its use of stereotype, its celebration of the trickster character, its parodical presentation of the Kenyan court system and its subtle commentary on politics despite the perception that it is a tool of the powers that be, atleast historically...are discussed. The question of its influence on other Kenyan television drama programmes is also discussed...does it form a formula from which others follow.?..etc
